In this episode Kelly discusses the importance of using video chat in your classroom. Video Chat is great for all levels of education. It is a great way to bring in experts, go on virtual tours and field trips, and learn from other students around the world.
Kelly looks at the strengths and specil uses for Skype, FaceTime and Google Hang Outs and why you will want to treat each like a golf club and use each for certain purposes.

Kelly interviews Quinn Rollins, author of Play Like a PIRATE: Engage Students with Toys, Games, and Comics. Quinn has been a social studies teacher in Granite School District in Salt Lake City since 2004, where he currently serves as the social studies curriculum specialist. Whether teaching children or adults, he believes in engaging students with humor, pop culture, and new perspectives. As a result, he’s been honored to work with the educational programs for the University of Utah, Utah State University, Brigham Young University-Idaho, and Westminster College of Salt Lake City. Quinn has also served as master teacher and mentor for a Teaching American History Grant and for a National Endowment for the Humanities Landmarks of American History Workshop in Chicago, Illinois.
In 2011, he received the Utah Council for the Social Studies Secondary Teacher of the Year award. In 2015, he was presented with “Utah’s Best of the West” award at the National Council for the Social Studies conference and the Best Historical Scene and Best Custom Minifigures awards at BrickSlopes 2015, Utah’s LEGO Convention.
Quinn loves presenting at local, state, and national conferences. His most popular presentations include student engagement, teaching with pop culture, the literacy of comic books and graphic novels, and using toys to teach.
Quinn’s hobbies include designing and playing with toys, doodling in staff meetings, reading comic books, and let’s say “running” to sound like a well-rounded person. He believes cheese is “an enemy to mankind” but won’t say no to pizza.
He earned his bachelor’s degrees in History Teaching and German Teaching and his master’s degree in Instructional Design and Educational Technology from the University of Utah.

Kelly interviews educator and novelist, Ty Roth. Ty is a high school English teacher and a Random House Author. Random House is without a doubt the largest book publsiher in the world and the dream of every novelist.
Ty Roth teaches literature and composition at both the high school and university level. He holds a Sociology degree from Xavier University, a Masters of Education from Ashland University, and a Masters of English from the University of Toledo. Ty was named one of the top “New Voices in YA Literature for 2011” by the American Booksellers Association, and SO SHELLY was chosen as a “Top Ten Romance for Youth” by Booklist, a Publication of the American Library Association. Ty’s second novel, GOODNESS FALLS, addresses the timely issue of concussions in high school football. Andy Losik has been teaching for 21 years in a variety of elementary school settings. Along with his classroom duties, Andy oversees online learning at Hamilton High School serves as a technology "helpful guy" in his school district and across the country for private, public, and charter schools. He has also provided insight for companies like Disney, Sifteo, Sony and most recently joined a special team at Discovery Education that works to advise and promote its many corporate partner educational initiatives. First and foremost Andy is a husband and dad who loves his family, fishing, and football as much as he loves the techie stuff.
Andy's new book, Stay in the Game, is about Jared Veldheer. Jared is one of the top left tackles in the National Football League but very little of his path to the Arizona Cardinals is what you might expect.
Stay in the Game follows Jared’s journey of being a brainy, over-sized kid who often found it hard to fit in to an athlete discovering his many talents. It didn’t “just happen” though and without a core set of principles in his life, it never would have. Sometimes the best thing you can do is “Stay in the Game.”
It took author Andy Losik and Jared’s parents nearly five years to complete, but “Stay in the Game” is now available in paperback and eBook.
The book targets older kids and the casual football fan but the hardcore pigskin geek will have plenty of material as it also details a lot of the recruiting process, training for the NFL Combine and Draft, as well as some of the inner workings of how the League and teams operate.

Kelly interviews Ryan McLane about his new book, "Your School Rocks... So Tell People!" Ryan co-authored this book with Eric Lowe. Ryan is the principal of Big Walnut Intermediate School, located in Sunbury, Ohio. He is passionate about making sure students are learning and having fun at the same time.
Ryan began his career as a high school social studies and business teacher, where he taught for twelve years. He is a graduate of Muskingum College and Xavier University. Ryan lives just outside of Columbus, Ohio, with his wife and two daughters.
This is a great interview for everyone to listen, whether you consider yourself the social media king or queen, a newbie, or someone who adamantly refuses to ever use social media. Ryan's book and intervew is a real eye opener, and makes you rethink your role in education. There are takeaways for everyone. Ryan and I talk about how schools can promote what they are doing in the best possible manner and what not to be concerned about when doing it.
I really enjoyed my conversation with Ryan. I also enjoyed his book. What a great guy and message!

Anthony is a passionate educator and an inspiration to students and teachers alike. I'm so excited for you to hear Anthony's story and learn what he is doing differently in and outside his classroom. This is an amazing interview!
Anthony lives in Salisbury, NC with his wife of twenty years and their three daughters.
In his school years, Anthony was a terrible student and a teacher’s nightmare who stayed in trouble. During that time, he failed 4th, 7th, 8th and 9th grades before dropping out of high school at the age of 16. Anthony received his G.E.D. and moved from job to job for nearly a decade. He later enrolled at Livingstone College and graduated in 4 years with a degree in Elementary Education. His goal is to teach with enthusiasm and give his students a different experience from his own in grade school. Teaching is his passion and his desire to help young people succeed has afforded Anthony the opportunity to travel the world as an educator. He has presented and given speeches all over the country.
Anthony currently teaches 4th/5th grade Science and Social Studies at Isenberg Elementary School in Salisbury, North Carolina.

Christine DiPaulo is an Apple Distinguished Educator and an Innovation Specialist at String Theory Schools in Philadelphia, PA.
"The String Theory High School for the Arts & Sciences offers students who have an interest in the arts, language, science and technology the opportunity to engage in a curriculum that combines superior coursework and significant field work to create a balance between artistry and academics that gives graduates a solid foundations for their future endeavors."
She teaches courses on Personal Branding, Digital Photography, Digital Portfolio Design, iLife, iWork and Presentation Design. She is certified in secondary mathematics, with Business Education certification and MSc as K12 certified Instructional Technology Specialist. Her first teaching position was a mathematics teacher at The Technical College High School/CCIU.
As an educator her passion is to enhance student's classroom experience using Apple technologies as a tool for creating and authoring content, collaborating, and developing meaningful projects. In the classroom she works with kids to build strong 21st century skills so they become critical thinkers.
Christine DiPaulo is an amazing intellectual a dynamic speaker, with her own TED talk no less. She is a visionary in both education and problem solving. She is creative. And she is really fun to spend time with too.

Kelly Croy interviews Anthony DiLaura about using iBooks Author to create multimedia iBooks in the classroom to engage students, provide Professional development for staff, and as a source for passive income.
Anthony DiLaura serves Zeeland Public Schools as a high school math teacher and instructional technology specialist. His one-to-one iPad math classroom leverages the iPad as tool for inquiry and student creativity. Anthony was recognized by Apple for his innovative use of iPad in education and named as an Apple Distinguished Educator in 2013. Anthony enthusiastically shares his knowledge at various conferences around the country including South by South West Edu, NCTM, FlipCon, and Phillips Exeter MST conference. Recently, he founded the organization iBookhack.org. Through ibook hackathons, he helps educators create their own digital curriculum in the form of mobile, media-rich, multi-touch iBooks that foster curiosity and student engagement. To date, ibookhack events have popped up across the country and seen hundreds of teachers author and publish high quality interactive textbooks using iBooks Author.
