This is the wired educator podcast episode 214, my interview with Brad Gustafson. Brad is an amazing educational leader, an award winning principal and the author of a fantastic new book titled The Six  Literacy Levers. We talk about literacy leadership, The Swiss-Army Knife of Literacy, Shiny Book Report Syndrome, and so much more!  Brad was on the Wired
Educator Podcast way back in episode 121 where we talked about his book Reclaiming Our Calling. Now Brad is back with a brand new book focused on Literacy. Literacy is something I am personally passion about and something I’m professionally working on with my district. I am so excited to share this interview with you.

We talk about:

It doesn’t matter what you teach. It doesn’t matter what your role is in education. This episode is absolutely for you. But before I share this amazing interview with you there’s something I wanna tell you about.

Dr. Brad Gustafson is an award-winning principal, best-selling author, speaker, and avid reader. Brad's newest book The 6 Literacy Levers, is a practitioner-friendly guide to championing readers--from anywhere in your school or organization. He also wrote Reclaiming Our Calling and Renegade Leadership. All of Brad's books are built on the belief that everything we do starts with relationships and connectedness. When Brad isn't in school, there's a good chance he's being schooled. He enjoys anything that's competitive including fishing, pickleball, ping pong, playing hearts, and battling Pokémon with his son. You can also find Brad with his high school sweetheart and their three kids spending time on the lake, reading, and writing.

Vanquish the Myth of The Digital Native Learner: What Every Educator Needs to Know About Teaching and Learning with Technology!

In this 208th episode of The Wired Educator Podcast I share what every educator needs to know about teaching and learning with technology.

Click here to listen to this episode.

In this episode Kelly presents solutions to many of the challenges and obstacles teachers and school districts face when implementing good instructional practice with technology. Our problems are never really about funding, the number of devices, the WiFi, professional learning, nor the devices themselves, but rather the correct mindset, culture and practice needed.

This episode addresses the following questions:

What do we do to counter and correct the myth that students know how to use technology to learn?

What kind of environment do we need to create in our classrooms about learning with technology?

What should the culture of our schools be with technology?

What should we really be teaching students do with technology?

How should we approach professional learning?

What can a school learn from a hospital about the use of technology?

What is permanent beta and why should I embrace it as my teaching philosophy?

And more!

You are going to love this episode. Be sure to leave a review and share it out.

In this episode of The Wired Educator Podcast, I have the privilege of interviewing one of my all-time educational heroes, Rick Wormeli. He's the Mick Jagger of Education. He tackles the big questions in education and explores every strategy and method and puts it to the test. He will make you laugh. He will make you think. He will challenge the way teach. He'll inspire you in so many ways! Rick isn't just a legend, he's one of the most authentic voices in education. We dive in so many areas including assessments, grading, rubrics, literacy, preparing for the new year, starting new initiatives and more.  I think think this may be the greatest interview with Rick ever recorded but I am biased. Buckle up.

Personal Leadership an interview with President Jim Tressel.

This is the Wired Educator Podcast, Episode 205 "Personal Leadership" an Interview with President Jim Tressel. Jim Tressel is one of my all-time heroes. I admire him for his faith, his character, his success on the football field as a coach, and as an academic leader as President of Youngstown State University. In this episode we focus primarily on academics. (I snuck in a couple football questions. They're good ones.) I really want to focus on what is it what it takes to be a great educational leader, especially a college president, how can we help students better prepare for college, his advice to teachers, students and administrators as we head back to school, and of course how we can each become better leaders. Jim’s character and Integrity shines through as always. I love this interview. You will too.

Click here to listen to Episode 205 "Personal Leadership" an Interview with President Jim Tressel on The Wired Educator Podcast.

James P. Tressel became the ninth president of Youngstown State University in 2014 and has been busy moving the campus forward on many fronts ever since.

Under President Tressel’s leadership, enrollment increased for the first time in five years, the academic quality of freshmen classes has continued upward, student retention is up and the university has solidly focused on student success - graduating on time, with little or no debt and with a job.  In addition, the university is hitting record fund-raising levels, keeping the lid on tuition costs, expanding scholarship opportunities and increasing both university and private housing options across campus.

Prior to becoming YSU president, Tressel was executive vice president for Student Success at the University of Akron, head football coach at Ohio State University (winning the national championship in 2002) and head football coach and executive director of Intercollegiate Athletics at YSU (winning four national championships).

In this episode of The Wired Educator Podcast, I interview Ross Cooper and Erin Murphy about their brand new book titled Project Based Learning: Real Questions. Real Answers. How to Unpack PBL an Inquiry. If there’s one thing that teaching during a pandemic has emphasized it's the need for inquiry and better student involvement. So many teachers have reported lack of engagement in remote learning. I think project-based learning is the future of school and a method of instruction that every educator should explore and apply. No matter where you are on the spectrum with project-based learning, you will appreciate and benefit from hearing from Ross and Erin.

Ross Cooper is currently an administrator in the Chappaqua Central School District. Previously, he was an Elementary School Principal, K-12 curriculum supervisor, Elementary Assistant Principal, and fourth grade teacher. He is an Apple Distinguished Educator and a Google Certified Innovator. As a nationally recognized leader in project based learning, he has worked with thousands of educators across the country to implement PBL, and in 2016 he coauthored Hacking Project Based Learning: 10 Easy Steps to PBL and Inquiry in the Classroom. While his day job is his first professional priority, he finds time to conduct workshops and speak on project based learning, inquiry-based learning, student-centered learning, instructional leadership, his professional experiences, and more. When he is not working, he enjoys eating steak and pizza and provoking his four beautiful nephews and niece. He blogs at rosscoop31.com, and you can connect with him via email, RossCoops31@gmail.com, and on Twitter @RossCoops31

Erin Murphy currently has the pleasure of serving as the Supervisor of Teaching & Learning for the Humanities subjects in the East Penn School District. She spent four years as a Middle School Assistant Principal and has classroom experiences ranging from kindergarten through fifth grade. She is a proud graduate of Penn State University’s Professional Development School, where she was trained in inquiry-based instructional approaches. Erin is coauthor of Hacking Project Based Learning: 10 Easy Steps to PBL and Inquiry in the Classroom (2016), and she consults internationally with leaders and learners regarding literacy, learning, and leadership. Erin, her husband, and her two daughters reside in Pennsylvania, and the family enjoys spending time gardening, watching football, and playing board games. You can connect with Erin through her blog, psumurphette.com, via email at psumurphette@gmail.com, and on Twitter @MurphysMusings5.

In this episode, I interview Jennifer Gonzalez, the Editor in Chief, Founder, and Host of Cult of Pedagogy. Cult of Pedagogy is one of the most respected and followed educational resources for teachers available. Cult of Pedagogy is more than just the amazingly well written and applicable posts on her blog, it’s more than her incredible podcast; Cult of pedagogy provides books, videos and other amazing resources to help teachers around the globe, but most importantly it is a community for teachers who love teaching and want to become their best.

Jennifer and I have an amazing conversation about how Cult of Pedagogy came to be, how it has been helping teachers during this pandemic, and we look ahead at the future of education. Jennifer is absolutely brilliant, and we have a lot of fun. Buckle-up.

Jennifer Gonzalez taught middle school language arts for seven years. Half that time was spent in the greater D.C. area, the other half in southcentral Kentucky. She earned National Board Certification in 2004. Then, after having her first child, sheleft teaching to be a stay-at-home mom.

In 2008, She was hired by a local university to teach pre-service teachers. This work gave her new passion for preparing and supporting educators. When Jennifer was in the classroom, shefelt alone in her nerdiness. The teachers’ lounge was never a safe place for her emotionally or intellectually, and finding others to share her real thoughts and feelings with took a lot of work. She learned to stifle the urge to gush about some new strategy She was planning to try or to open up about a struggle She was having with her students. She came to expect that her genuine questions would be met with sarcasm.

With the creation of her site Cult of pedagogy, She hopes to create what shedid not have herself: a vibrant, encouraging, stimulating community of teachers, supporting each other toward excellence. She believes if we can reach across the limits of geography and find each other, there’s no limit to the amazing things we can accomplish.

(From Jennifer's Cult of Pedagogy site, pronoun changed to third person.)

In this is the Wired Educator Podcast, I  interview Stephen Cox, the Founder and CEO of the United Kingdom’s leading teacher training provider, Osiris, and host of the World Education Summit. He’s an expert in visible learning and works closely with John Hattie. He will enchant you with his accent, and he will blow you away with all that he’s learned about what really works in education and what outstanding teaching really looks like. He’s got the research, he’s got the data, he’s got the answers. I love this episode. I grew so much talking to Stepher and you will too. Put your headphones on and brace for impact.

Stephen is the host of the World Education Summit which I encourage you to sign up for right now. Here's the link worldedsummit.com.   It is a virtual summit from March 22 to March 25, but you will want to hit that link right now and sign up. It’s that good. John Hattie, author of Visible Learning and one of the most important minds in education is their keynote speaker, and there are over 400 other amazing presenters. This is the virtual summit you’re looking for. Period. I’m not kidding. Hit the link, take a look at who’s there and you will want in. It’s amazing.

Stephen Cox is the founder and CEO of Osiris Educational, the UK’s leading independent teacher training provider, and the host of The World Education Virtual Summit. For the last quarter of a century, he has worked with the world’s top educationalists to bring pioneering and innovative training to teachers and leaders across the U.K and throughout schools around the world. During this time, he has developed and supported award-winning educational programmes including: the Osiris Teaching Intervention, Collective Leadership and Visible Learning. His latest cutting-edge mission is centred on creating worldwide online systems for teacher and learning development.

In response to the disruption caused to worldwide education by COVID-19, Stephen has re-focused on creating sustainable, online, interactive networks and programmes for teacher and leader development. He is continually driven by his belief that all learners deserve a great start in life, and this is achieved through an unrelenting focus on the quality and impact of teaching and learning.

I am honored to share Stephens Bryant’s with you in this amazing conversation. Here’s Stephan Cox

Professional Summary:

Fresh out of a PGCE in Secondary education from the University of Warwick, Stephen taught economics for ten years in the UK and at the British International School, Cairo (BISC). Dissatisfied with the quality of teacher training that he was receiving, Stephen moved back to the UK in 1997 and founded Osiris Educational with the 30-year vision of improving the life chances of children across the world.

Osiris had humble beginnings, with Stephen and his partner Brenda developing and delivering their own training, based off their own expertise at quality provision. Over the years, Osiris quickly grew to become the nation’s leading independent provider of teacher training, with the world’s greatest educationalists in collaboration.

During this time, Stephen worked closely with such world-renowned educationalists as Professor John Hattie, Professor Guy Claxton, Professor Carol Dweck and many others on developing and releasing now world-famous programmes for teachers in the UK, including Visible LearningPlus, the Osiris Mindsets Programme, and the Osiris Teaching Intervention.

In this episode of The Wired Educator Podcast, I interview one of my all-time favorite writers, podcasters, and thinkers, Seth Godin.

Was I starstruck interviewing one of my favorite humans? Absolutely! What was Seth’s reply when I told him? "Now that’s just silly." Seth is the author of over 19 best-selling books, the host of one of the most influential podcasts in the world, and writes what many consider the most successful and influential daily blog of all time. Seth is a teacher and a creator. But what I wanted to talk to Seth most about was his acclaimed manifesto ‘Stop Stealing Dreams’ which became a viral TEDTalk video. Stop Stealing Dreams focuses on educational reform, the future of education, and what we can do about it. It addresses what is really is, should be, and where schools needs to go.

Seth Godin is a teacher and a creator of wonderful projects. For over 30 years he’s been inspiring people and teaching them how to level-up. He hosts a daily blog that has been uninterrupted for over a decade. He Is the host of the Akimbo podcast and the creator and founder of altMBA, a 30 day workshop that is life-changing. He’s delivered five of the most viewed Ted talks in the world. He is the author of over 19 best selling books. His new book is called The Practice.

I am so proud to share this interview because Seth has had such a profound impact on me. His art encouraged me to share my art and taught me how to do it.

In short, I think he is one of the most brilliant people on the planet whether conversation is on education, marketing, music, dark chocolate or whatever. Seth is the wise counsel you need.

Enjoy.

In this episode of The Wired Educator Podcast, I interview Johnathan Alsheimer.

Jonathan is a passionate educator and  the author of an an awesome new book titled Next Level Teaching: Empowering Students and Transforming Culture. Jonathan and I have some great laughs and a fantastic conversation about what it truly means to level-up, make a difference in the lives of students, and how to deliver 'next level teaching.'  We talk student engagement, student motivation, and building relationships to enhance the classroom and school culture, and so much more.

Jonathan Alsheimer is a champion fighting for the limitless possibilities of teachers as a driving force for infectious classrooms and positive school culture.

Jonathan Alsheimer is the unorthodox, energetic, and entertaining middle school teacher who refuses to live a life of limitations and works with UFC Fighters, Celebrities, and Clothing Brands. Jonathan is the author of "NEXT LEVEL TEACHING" published by Dave Burgess Consulting and can be found on Amazon.

As a passionate educator and National Keynote Speaker always striving to be "That Teacher" that his students remember!

Jonathan, teaches at the world-renowned Fred Lynn Middle School, which was featured in multiple documentaries "Relentless" and "Relentless: Chasing Accreditation.” He has been featured as the teacher who forged a partnership with UFC Fighter and light-weight contender Paul Felder to bring a message of never giving up, fighting for their education, and empowering the students to believe in themselves, all principles that Jonathan promotes in his classroom.

Jonathan Alsheimer also partnered with Fear the Fighter, MMA clothing brand to establish a stop-bullying campaign with "Relentless" Principal Hamish Brewer. Jonathan Alsheimer didn't stop there and established a formed a relationship with Chris "Drama" Pfaff, MTV reality star and CEO of Young and Reckless to bring clothing to his "students in need" and worked to build student leaders in his school.

As Jonathan always says, "Game-changing is not a cliche motto; it is a way of life... some talk about it while others live by it!

In this episode of The Wired Educator Podcast I Interview Samantha Wheeler. A typical Wired Educator Podcast guest is someone who’s written books, speaks from the stage, or earned multiple recognitions and awards for education, my guest today is wonderful and awesome, but for none of those reasons; Samantha is a senior in college rocking it as a student-teacher in one of the most challenging times in education. I wanted a fresh perspective on teaching and learning and Sami delivered. She is brilliant. I learned so much from this interview and you will too.

Samantha Wheeler, or Sami as she goes by, is a current senior in college at Rider University in Lawrenceville, NJ. She is pursuing a dual degree in secondary education and mathematics. So far, she has completed an educational technology certification as well as a Google Level 1 Educator certification. She is also a part of the Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program which seeks to place teachers with strong STEM content knowledge into high-need school districts upon graduation.

At Rider, Sami is extremely involved on campus and is a part of many different organizations such as the Student Education Association, Math Club and four different national honors societies! She has made herself known on campus through multiple leadership and mentoring roles such as working as an orientation leader, peer coaching new students, and leading seminars for first year education majors. Sami has just started her last semester of college and is currently student teaching in a local middle school in a 7th grade math class.

Once she graduates, Sami plans to teach math at the secondary level where she can’t wait to share her love of STEM with others! She hopes to someday earn her masters and even possibly her PhD in hopes to teach upper level mathematics at the collegiate level.
